Outagamie County Public Safety Communications

Outagamie County’s move into a new public safety communications center offered the chance to reimagine how dispatchers work. Partnering with Watson Consoles, the county created a space designed around dispatcher comfort, intentional ergonomics, and long-term durability. By aligning functionality with room for growth and clear visibility, we delivered a solution that blends advanced technology with operator wellness, resulting in a center built for efficiency, teamwork, and a thriving community.

Project at a Glance

  • The Outagamie County Public Safety Communications Center moved from a cramped basement into a modern, open space with natural light to better serve the county’s steadily growing population of more than 200,000 people.
  • Primary Challenge: Creating a space that accounted for growth, technology integration, and the well-being of dispatchers who handle 18,000 calls per month.
  • The project included 14 Mercury Corner Consoles with wireless chargers, status lights, and Motorola equipment integrations, in addition to team tables with technology cabinets, and a mobile meeting table.

The Request

For years, Outagamie County’s dispatchers worked in a cramped basement environment that limited both comfort and efficiency. The move into a new facility offered the chance to create a space designed around dispatcher wellness, natural light, and long-term performance. Priorities included ergonomic workstations to reduce strain during long shifts, dedicated supervisory and training stations that allowed for oversight while maintaining open communication, seamless technology integration for multi-monitor arrays and Motorola equipment, a layout that ensured clear sightlines to monitor walls on two sides of the room, and durable furniture built to withstand the demands of daily use.

The Solution

Watson Consoles delivered a solution built on intentional ergonomics and unparalleled support, outfitting the center with Mercury Corner Consoles that are height-adjustable and equipped with wireless charging, status lights, and Motorola integrations.

Each console was paired with expansive, custom-designed monitor arrays to meet Outagamie’s unique multi-monitor specifications. In-between positions, team tables with integrated technology cabinets provided organized storage, simplifying cable management and equipment access, while supervisor and training stations were thoughtfully integrated into the layout to allow oversight and skill development without disrupting operations.

To streamline the process, Watson pre-installed power supplies into the furniture. “We weren’t aware of all of the power supplies being preinstalled in the furniture itself,” said Captain Nathan Borman of the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Department. “This made installing the equipment much easier.”

Additionally, a mobile meeting table added flexibility, serving as an administrative space that can be relocated throughout the center as needed.

The Results

Feedback from dispatchers and supervisors has been overwhelmingly positive, with staff noting the comfort and speed of the height adjustment, the efficiency of built-in heaters, and the added benefit of console lighting. Supervisors praised the consoles’ durability, superior wiring, and thoughtful storage solutions, while the move to a large, open space with windows significantly boosted morale.

The design of the console is well thought out. In addition to the comfort of the dispatchers working at the console, the wiring and equipment storage has proven to be superior to our previous consoles.

Borman added: “The furniture was installed and functioning as promised. The few small hiccups we ran into were handled promptly, and everything was working perfectly in very little time. The furniture itself is clearly overbuilt for the task and should take many years of heavy use and abuse.”
