A Brief History of Veterans Day

World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 8, 1919. However, the fighting actually ceased at 11am on November 11, 1918. The following year President Wilson declared November 11th "Armistice Day" to honor those who fought valiantly in WWI. But after the cessation of WWII and the Korean War, legislation passed to dedicate November 11th as a federal holiday to honor American veterans of all wars.
